Classes and experiences are provided to teach responsibility in everything from practicing good hygiene skills, understanding good nutrition, developing responsible community and personal relationships to voting.  The list continues to grow as needs develop.  Advocacy groups learn to advocate for themselves as well as for others with disabilities while Venture Crew and AKTION Club members meet their goals to complete at least one community service project each month.

Our responsibility to those we work for includes providing the most comprehensive training for their staff in order to insure the best supports.  Initial and ongoing training to develop those skills continues throughout the length of employment at Sunflower.

Without sound financial planning and management we would have great difficulty in providing the supports required.  Our fiscal and office staff are dedicated to maintaining those supports
for the agency, our staff, and ultimately those we serve.

Our very busy maintenance manager is responsible for clean, well maintained equipment
and buildings required to serve.

Sunflower serves many individuals that have physical and/or intellectual disabilities serious enough to require total support in all activities of life.  Providing the physical and occupational therapies necessary to maintain health and well-being is a responsibility we take very seriously.  Providing the services and opportunities that enhance skills and quality of life is the guiding principal in developing their supports.

Sunflower recognized our responsibilities to the communities that support our agency and
took on the area recycling operation in order to give back to the citizens of those communities.  Practicing and teaching good stewardship of our environment has become routine here as
we continually identify new methods for enhancing our recycling efforts.
In the decade since we began operating First Step Recycling we have increased the
amount of materials kept from landfills many fold.

Community access is a process of identifying opportunities and teaching the skills necessary to successfully participate in all the area has to offer.  Trips to state locations of interest as well as many local destinations are a part of this process.

Job Placement staff fulfill the responsibility to provide opportunities for community placement.
Assisting people through the process of identifying desired employment and skills, learning the basics needed to be successful in working with supervisors and coworkers, applying and interviewing for positions, learning and teaching the skills needed to succeed, and providing ongoing
supports as needed are all components of successful job coaching.

Sunflower operates General Public Transportation services for the five counties we serve.
Because we believe in responsibility to our communities as well as to those we serve, Sunflower has developed and maintains the only evening and weekend public transportation in the area.
Many local residents, in addition to those served by us, rely on this service in order to get to
medical and other necessary appointments, shop, attend church, and to visit friends and family.

Our Human Resource Coordinator dedicates herself to finding the best staffing options available to fill the 140 positions required to support the independence those serve we expect and deserve.

Our medical support staff are responsible for coordinating and insuring necessary health care for
those we serve while insuring their understanding and involvement in developing a healthy lifestyle.  Staff are provided with training in supporting the many health issues and conditions present
as well as in supporting medication administration.

Sunflower serves over 80% of those we support in homes they choose from available community options.  In the past few weeks we have assisted numerous people in moving to more independent locations.  Our hard-working Residential coordinators provide the assistance people need to make those moves successful.  Our Supportive Home Care services provide needed support for growth to individuals still living in their family homes.  We are dedicated to insuring people can continue to live as independently as they can and to exercise the right to choose where and with whom to live.
Sunflower has a responsibility to provide the experience, education, and ongoing support folks need to make that possible.  With that comes an obligation to teach those we support that they have a responsibility to maintain their homes and to be good tenants, neighbors and members of the community.

Our responsibilities in our Employment Services include maintaining contracts to provide opportunities to work and earn while teaching skills that enhance the possibility of community employment.
Many people that were once thought incapable of earning a real paycheck have proven it is possible.
It is quite common for those employed part-time at our manufacturing and recycling plant to ear
an amount significant enough to greatly enhance their quality of life and
lesson dependence on benefits and taxpayer dollars.
