Sunflower Diversified hosts Turkey Trot 5K, fun run on Nov. 11

The idea for a new Sunflower Diversified Services fundraiser was born in 2021 and now organizers are planning for the third-annual Turkey Trot 5K.

“We have had so many positive comments about the first two events that we want to keep the streak going,” said Cody Harris, director of planned giving and community support. “Participants really like the route we take, as well as our street blockers that help with safety.”

The fundraiser for children and adults with special needs is set for Saturday, Nov. 11, at Brit Spaugh Park, with registration at 9:30 a.m.

Sunflower’s co-sponsor is Clara Barton Medical Center.

The 5K race begins at 10:30 a.m. and one-mile fun run a few minutes later.

Early registration is open until Oct. 24 at a cost of $25 for the 5K and $20 for the fun run. Both are $5 more from Oct. 25 to Nov. 11.

T-shirts are available with early registration and while supplies last after that.

Races begin and end at Brit Spaugh Park; the safe route travels through that area of town. Everyone can go at their own speed.

“You can walk, run or trot,” Harris commented. “We want everyone to feel comfortable while they support a worthy cause. The people Sunflower serves are always grateful for their community’s support.”

Since participants are asked to bring two non-perishable items, the Barton County Food Bank benefits too.

Those who donate food items may enter a drawing for a Garmin watch, compliments of Catalyst Therapy and Sports Rehab.

Age groups are: up to 14; 15-24; 25-34; 35-44; 45-54; and 55 plus. The top three finishers in each division receive medals. The overall male and female 5K winners earn a turkey, while fun runners receive ribbons.

“The event promises to be a lot of fun,” Harris commented. “It gives us a good reason to get out and get moving for Sunflower and the Food Bank at the beginning of the holiday season of giving.

“We appreciate Clara Barton and other sponsors for helping with this fundraiser, as well as anyone who participates in any way.”
